Family

Lucy Bernard was married to Dr. Edmund Gwyn by whom she had a son and a daughter, Lucy Gwyn, who married Thomas Reade.

According to "The Reade Family" in The William and Mary Quarterly, Thomas married Lucy Gwyn, daughter of Edmund Gwyn and had eleven children, of whom only five are really known (Citing Quarterly III 29, 40; V 54, 279; Virginia Magazine IV, 204).[3]

Edward Creffield, Jr., "now of London," left a will, dated 24 Nov 1694, proved 9 Dec 1694, in which he left a bequest to "my Daughter in Lawe [i.e., step-daughter] Mrs. Lucy now or late wife of Mr. Thomas Reed of the County of Gloucester in Virginia one Diamond Ring which my late wife (Mother of said Lucye) used to weare, one Gold Necklace consisting of six chains Fastened to a locket of Massey gold, also..." [c] The records of York County show that Colonel George Reade had a son. Thomas. An act of Assembly, passed November, 1769, recites that Edmund Gwynn, late of Gloucester, deceased, possessed a tract of land of 550 acres, in the parish of Ware. Gloucester, and by his will, dated ]\Iarch 10, l(iS3, he devised said land to his son. John Gwynn, and in the event of his tleath without issue, to his daughter, Lucy Gwynn, and soon after died: and saiil John entered into possession and was succeeded by his sister. Lue> . who married Thomas Reade, of Gloucester, deceased, and by him had issue, Thomas Reade. her eldest son. and Jno. Reade, her second son. and the said Lucy dying, her son Thomas entered into possession, and dying without issue, was succeeded by the said John Reade, late of the County of King and Queen, Clerk, deceased, and on his death the land descended to his only daughter and heir, Sarah, now the wife of .Tolin Rootes, Gentleman.

Lucy, Gwyn is frequently incorrectly reported as being born in 1665, which is impossible. She was alive 9 Feb 1743/4 when mentioned in the will of her son, the Reverend John Reade, of Stratton Major Parish, King and Queen County, Virginia. Traditionally, Captain Thomas Reade and his wife, Lucy (Gwyn) Reade are said to have had eleven children, but proof only exists to establish the following: Thomas, John, Joyce, Lucy, Mary, and Mildred.
