Biography

Thomas was probably born at Ware Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia.[1] He was the third son of George Reade and Elizabeth Martiau.[1][2]

We do not know the exact birth date for Thomas. However we do know that he and his brother Benjamin were underage on 24 January 1687 when their mother wrote her will.[3] So they were probably born after c. 1666 (using this date). Also reported: Birth in 1649 at Warner Hall, Gloucester County, Virginia (without evidence, source is Ancestry Tree).

Family

Thomas married about 1688[2] to Lucy Gwynn, daughter of Edmund Gwyn,[3] and granddaughter of Col. Hugh Gwynn, Burgess.[4] Also according to Louise du Bellet, Lucy Gwynn/Gwin/Gwyn was the daughter of Edward/Edmund/Edmond Gwynn/Gwin/Gwyn.[5]

Researchers disagree about how many and which children are known. Louise du Bellet reports they had eleven children,[5] and The William and Mary Quarterly reports the same (see below)[3]

Children of Thomas and Lucy:[2]

  2. Mildred

According to "The Reade Family" in The William and Mary Quarterly, Thomas married Lucy Gwyn, daughter of Edmund Gwyn and had eleven children, of whom only five are really known (Citing Quarterly III 29, 40; V 54, 279; Virginia Magazine IV, 204).[3]
