Lucy Ellen Steele

Lucy Ellen Swain Steele was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Swain and Mary Ann Swain. On July 28, 1887, she married Greenlee Steele in Crawford County, Illinois. Of this union two children were born; Mary Delia Steele and Raymond Greenlee Steele. She was also mother to Genevieve Steele, a daughter of Greenlee's first marriage.

Lucy Ellen Swain Steele, daughter of Andrew Jackson and Mary Ann Swain, was born near New Lebanon, IN, June 18, 1862. Passed away Sept. 30, 1942 at the home of her son, Raymond G. Steele on Lamotte Prairie. She was the third child of a family of eight children, six girls and two boys. All deceased except Laura Dodd of Sullivan, IN; and Helen Crenshaw of Little Rock, AR, and Edgar Swain of Jackson, MI. Members of the family deceased are Clara B. Cato, of Hutsonville, ILL; Lucy Steele, subject of our sketch; Anna Garrard of Palestine, ILL; Margaret Plunkett of Indianapolis, IN; Carl Swain of Riverside, CA. She was united in marriage to the late Greenlee Steele, July 28, 1885, at the home of the bride's parents on the Bradbury Farm now owned by Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Pleasant. They started housekeeping on the farm owned by her son. Her husband preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1938. She was a member of the M. E. Church at Hutsonville at the time of her death. The deceased leaves two daughters, Genevieve Stewart, of Anderson, IN; and Mary Anelia (Delia) Anderson of Palestine; and one son, Raymond G. Steele of Lamotte Prairie; thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives and a host of friends on Lamotte Prairie and in Hutsonville. Funeral services were held at the Oak Grove Church Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. E. W. Fox, assisted by Rev. E. H. Purdy. The remains were laid to rest in the nearby cemetery by the side of her husband.
