About Lucy Virgin

Not the daughter of Thomas Dickerson of Southold

Disputed Origins

Post from Dolores Rutherford to Genealogy.com (2005). Dolores is the author of Virgin Vicissitudes, a paper on the descendants of John and Elizabeth (Dickerson) Virgin:

"Jeremiah VIRGIN's wife's name was Lucy, but she has never been proven to have been a DICKERSON. I have thoroughly researched the records of all of the areas in Maryland where our VIRGINs and DICKERSONs lived before moving to PA and have found no DICKERSON (any possibly spellings) families with a dau. named Lucy. I feel that, although the DICKERSON name, the family may have confused Lucy's maiden name with the maiden name of Jeremiah VIRGIN's mother.....Elizabeth....who was a DICKERSON before her marriage to John VIRGIN (Jeremiah's father). So, until more evidence comes along to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Lucy was a DICKERSON, I cannot accept DICKERSON as Lucy's maiden name. This misconception has been circulated for many years and should NOT be given as FACT or circulated as such!"
