Information found in death certificate obtained from New York State Department of Health. Interesting that I thought he was an attorney. My Dad had always said that. Death certificate states he wasa musician and piano instructor. Census documents in Vienna listed him as a concert pianist with an atelier or studio for teaching.
wig Schwarz entered the US on a ship from Southhampton, Enland in 1936 and then reentered from Canada. They took the train across the border into New York state. The documents show my father's Hebrew name in parentheses as Eliezer. They were identified as Jewish immigrants from Vienna.
n was Frederich Schwarz a composer and muscian whose last known address was in Berlin in 1836. His daughter Paula lived in Vienna and had a son named Felix born in 1926. Paula and Felix remained in Vienna in the apartment of Ludwig and Irene when Ludwig and Herbert left for New York in 1936. Frederich were presumed dead in the camps during the war. Paula and Felix went to Brno after krystalnacht, were arrested there in 1941. They were sent to Therezenstat and stayed there for about 8 months. Then Paula was sent to Auschwitz and died there. Felix went toAuschwitz and worked as a slavelaborer until Jan. 1945. He was then transferred to buchenwald and survived the war. He came to the US in 1947.
Ludwig left her for Irene Ottile Neurath and met her when she was only 19 years old. The story obtained from my mother was that she was an opera singer in Vienna. She had a sister Josephine. Ludwig and Irene had my father prior to their marriage. She converted and my father had a bris in Vienna naming him Eliezer. Records are in the Jewish Archives of Vienna. Uncle Robert Schwarz adopted my father in 1824 to give him a legal name. Ludwig and Irene were married by rabbi Hias in Vienna but marriage not recognized by government.
warz)Hayward left Vienna to escape Hitler and the Nazi's. Ludwig had a brother, Arthur, in New York who sponsored them and helped them financially once they arrived in 1936. They lived in New York City at first as my Dad initially attended NYU. Then was admitted to Dental School in Buffalo.
rwin.
n Germany and Austria at that time for the middle class to decorate their homes with these original painted copies of masterpieces. Aunt Tilda was an actress and had evidently been quite famous. Therewas an incredible painting of her in their apartment which I recall from my childhood.
