HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30—Ludwig Stossel, a character actor known in the nineteen‐sixties as the “little old winemaker” of television commercials, died here yesterday. He was 89 years old. His widow, the former Eleanore Birn, survives.
Ludwig Stossel, a native of Lockenhaus, Austria, was an actor and director in Breslau, Germany, from 1911 to 1925. His associates there included Peter Lorre and Francis Lederer. From 1925 to 1933 he played character parts and performed in operettas in Berlin.
After Hitler came to power, Mr. Stossel went to Austria, then came to the United States. He went to Hollywood and played elderly Germanic types, such as Lou Gehrig's father in “Pride of the Yankees” and Albert Einstein in “The Beginning of the End.”
He appeared in “Woman of the Year,” “The Man I Married,” “Cloak and Dagger,” “Call Me Madam” and in several television comedy series.
