About Luis Lauchengco

From Cornejo's Commonwealth Directory of the Philippines (1939), by Miguel Cornejo (p. 1863)

LAUCHENGCO, Dr. Luis - Physician and Surgeon; office, Lack & Davis Bldg., 110 Echague, Sta. Cruz, Manila; tel. 2-50-22; res., 2225 Misericordia, Sta. Cruz, Manila; tel. 2-65-30.

Dr. Luis Lauchengco, a well-known physician and surgeon in the city, was born in Manila on Aug. 25, 1890; son of Bernardino Lauchengco and Antonina Cabrera; educated in the Ateneo de Manila, Instituto Burgos, and University of Sto. Tomas, graduating with the degrees of A.B. and M.D., and was licensed to practice his medical profession in 1917. While yet a medical student he married the former Miss Angela Alonso, of the well-known Alonso family of Manila. Soon after his graduation he was offered the position of Resident Physician in the Santiago Hospital, which was then located at the corner of Azcarraga and Avenida Rizal, and he accepted the position with a salary of ₱100.00 a month, and, after three months of satisfactory service, his salary was raised to ₱150.00 a month, but in his desire to acquire more experience in surgical cases and in treating contagious diseases, he transferred to the San Lázaro Hospital, where he worked with Dr. Catalino Gavino, the present director, in 1918. He was later appointed a Surgeon, Phil. Health Service and, upon passing the required examination for Public Health Service, he was sent to Butuan Public Hospital, Mindanao, as director of said institution, where he worked for eight months, after which he returned to Manila and was assigned to the Meisic Health Station as medical officer. Enjoying the confidence of high government officials, he was chosen as Official Physician to the Legislative party to Baguio headed by the late Representative Mariano P. Leuterio in 1921, and was later proposed for promotion to the position of District Health Officer at Daet, Camarines Norte, but he declined the offer and preferred to stay in Manila, where a few months later he established a private office.

Since 1924 he has conducted his office at Lack & Davis Bldg., where he is still located. In 1927 he was commissioned First Lieutenant, Medical Corps Reserve, U.S. Army, but he resigned two years later to devote his full attention to his medical profession and business interests. He is also a visiting physician of various private hospitals, treasurer of the Metro Drug Corporation, and trustee of the Zambales-San Juan Chromite Company. He is also engaged in realty business.
