Lukas (82), a farmer who lived alone on the Farm Vaalpenskraal, Matjesfontein in the Thabazimbi district of the Eastern Cape, was bludgeoned to death with a blunt object, in his kitchen, on 16th December 2002.

Koos Venter, chairman of the Matjesfontein farmers association, said they that for the past few years they had passed around Lucas's hat to raise money for the speakers. "When we heard that he didn't answer when he was called," he said. "It was unacceptable that 'such things' were happening, his nearest neighbour is more than a kilometer from him off." "His wife died about two years ago," he said.

Sarel Theron of the farm Eldorado said he was on his way to the service when one of Lucas's workers arrived at his farm. According to Sarel, he and another neighbour's son gained access to Lucas's yard and came across his body in the kitchen.
