History http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=document&guid=9b9e2370-a725-4b99-ac8... History Added by plemons1209 on 27 Jan 2008 From Earl E. Jobe per research trip to Virginia (May 2001) "One principal purpose for my visit this week was to determine the real maiden name for Nathan's wife Lydia. You'll recall that Bill Jobe's record shows the name to be McCorky and that other information shows Lydia to be the daugher of Darby McCarty, so I was more or less convinced that McCorky was the product of a transcription error. I was unable to find the actual marriage bond in Shenandoah County. The abstract of the marriage record in the county court house and in the book compiled by John Vogt and T. William Kethley Jr. of Shenandoah marriage bonds show the bride's name as (are you ready for this?)....MCCARKY In the records of three counties, in every index I search, I also searched for McCorky or any unusual variation thereto, I can say that if either McCarkys or Mccorkys lived in Shnandoah, Warren or Frederick counties, they left no trace in the public records I visited. I am convinced that Lydia was the daughter of Darby mcCarty and I'm going to make that change in my record. In Edinburg Library, Shenandoah County, I search a microfilm with 1,500 images of marriage bonds from 1772 thru 1788 with no luck. I was told thsee records had been badly stored and some lost in the "picking over" of 200 years. Since the marriage is found in the court House index and in Vogt's abstract record, (Vogt did indicate that the marriage took place in 1775), I suspect that it did exist, was seen and recorded and is now among those which have been lost." From Sally Byers (May 2001) -- "Copied the marriage record for Nathan Job & Lydia McCarky/Corky/Carty. In this particular writing it could be any of the three. Looks like it was a minister's return written after the fact as if he were summing up the whole year. No month and day, but 1775." Following from vickie Gorby (April 2001) -- "Virginia Genealogists" contributed by Prentiss Price of Rogersville Tennessee, Vol. 3, pg 23-26. The following records are taken from a bible printed in Edinburgh by Alexander Kincaid, his majesty's printer, 1762 which is owned by Mrs. Sharlie Cope Hill of Hawkins Co.,TN. They were copied in 1948. This seems to have been the bible of James McCarty b. 1736 (s/o Darby) and descending through his son William. It names the children of James and William but I am going to skip the and give Darby and Hannah's just like it is written down. Childrenof Darby and Hannah McCarty: James McCarty b. July ye 4th 1736 Mary McCarty born December ye 10th 1738 Isaac McCarty born April ye 18 1741 Sarah McCarty born July ye 3rd 1743 Rachel McCarty born October ye 28th 1745 Elizabeth McCarty born June ye 18th1748 Hannah McCarty born December ye 9th 1750 Enoch McCarty born April ye 29th 1753 Jonathon McCarty born April ye 29th 1756 Lydia McCarty born Aprl ye 30th 1756 Benjamin McCarty born December ye 22nd 1759 Note: This Bible was printed in 1762 which means that these dates were entered After the last child was born - so was written after the fact. Not sure if Jonathan and Lydia were twins - born close to midnight (therefore two different dates) or what the explanation is for their dates being a day apart!
