Lydia wrote her younger sister Anna to send money for passage on the Cunard liner "Sythia" for Alli who had learned catering at school in Finland and could be self-supporting on arrival. Arriving in Boston they were detained as someone in charge had forgotten to check the number of people permitted to enter the USA from Finland. Father got a lawyer to expedite things- but to no avail--instead, after staying several weeks in this internment center in Boston she and the other Finns were sent to Liverpool in Great Briton where they returned on the same ship on its next voyage 3 weeks later.
