About Lysbeth Janz

Jan Janszoon Van Haarlem was born c. 1588 in Haarlem, Holland to undocumented parents. Some claim Jan Dirckxz and Barbara Jostensed while other sources have listed Gysbert Van Haarlem and Kornelia as his parents. There are no birth records or other primary sources to support these conjectures. He first married Soutgen Caves, whom he left behind in Holland before becoming a pirate. Together, they had at least two children:

  • Lysbeth Jansz b. c. 1600
  • NN wife of Jacob Arrissen who accompanied Lysbeth on her visit to her father
  • The trip to visit Jan Janszoon van Haerlem by his daughter Lysbeth and her brother-in-law was part of the Journal of Adriaen Matham 1640 -1642. Matham was a well-known engraver and painter from Haarlem who accompanied Ambassador de Liedekerke on his diplomatic mission to Morocco. The English translation of the entire diary may be read at:

Lijsbeth Jans

Lijsbeth Jans was one of the daughters of the notorious renegade Jan Janszoon van Haerlem and his Dutch wife Soutgen Caves. Another daughter of Jansoon's was married to Jacob Arissen, who was also on board the “Gelderlandt”. Jan Janszoon (then living near Sallee, Morocco) also appears in this journal.

I have been in contact several times with Cor Snabel who translated the journal and she translated the map key for me showing the Home of Antoni du Turck (#22) shown in 1639 map, Manatvs gelegen op de Noot [sic] Riuier, by Vinckeboons, Joan. https://www.loc.gov/item/97683586/ This map can be found on the profile of her half brother Anthony the Turk. I am also the person who added the translated Deposition by Cor Snabel as the source for Soutgen Caves as wife of Jan Janszoon van Haarlem.
