About Mabel Ann Hakes

Mabel Ann Morse is the daughter of Justus Morse and Elizabeth Towne. She married Collins Rowe Hakes and together had twelve children. Collins Hakes, Riley Morse and Orlando and Orin Merrill were the first to discover gold in the Goldfield area of the Superstition Mountains east of Mesa. He and his wife Mabel, built one of the first hotels in Mesa on the corner of MacDonald and Main streets. Mabel was active in the Women's Suffrage movement.

Mabel Ann Morse Hakes was president of the Mesa Ward Relief Society for five years and counselor and then president of the Maricopa Stake Relief Society, and was the Mesa representative to the Woman’s Suffrage Convention in Chicago in 1893. When one irate gentleman speaker said that “women have no business in public affairs; they should be home sewing buttons on shirts and darning their husband’s socks,” Mabel Ann arose and informed him, “Sir, you will be pleased to know that all of my husband’s buttons were on and the socks darned before I left home.”

Their children were:

Ann Eliza, Avis Caroline, Sarah Melissa, Helen Lotheta, Lottie Mable, Harriet Jane, Effie Elizabeth, Patty Celinda, Collins Riley, Nettie Luelia, Daniel Edgar, and Ruby Amanda.
