Born Madeleine White in London in 1921, she became a student at the University of Paris.
After the fall of France in 1940, she was arrested along with her French-born mother and interned at the Vittel camp. There she met Sofia Skipworth who became a very close friend. Both spent their time in the camp producing fake documents to help Jews, including babies.
At great risk to their lives they maintained close contact with the French Resistance and managed to save the lives of many Jews.
Madeleine Steinberg was given posthumous awards by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among Nations and as a British Hero of the Holocaust
