DANIEL (2) COLES, b. Ipswich, Mass., about 1637; m. Warwick, R. I., about 1662, Maha-shalal-hasbaz Gorton, dau. of Samuel and Mary (Mayplett) Gorton of Warwick.

The name of the daughter of Samuel Gorton who m. Daniel Coles, practically coinciding in structure with the "Maher-shalal-hash-baz," Isaiah viii: 1, 3. explained in the concordance as "in making speed to the spoil, he hasteneth the prey" seems difficult of application, but some of the perilous experiences in Gorton's heglra from Boston to Warwick, may have suggested the Jewish situation at the time of Isaiah's dreary prophecy.

Biography

Mahershallalhashbaz (Maher) Gorton was the daughter of Samuell Gorton and Mary Mayplett of Warwick, Rhode Island. She married about 1662 at Warwick, Daniel Coles who was born about 1637 at probably Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was the son of of Robert Coles and Mary Hawxhurst.[1]

Lewis Janes wrote:[2]

“One of the daughters, with the remarkable Scriptural name of Mahershallalhashbaz, married Daniel Cole, and removed to Glen Cove, Long Island, then known as Moscheto Cove, and has numerous descendants still residing in that vicinity."
From the Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island:[1]

“Daniel, d. Nov. 29, 1692; m. Maha— Gorton.”
Daniel Coles died at Musketa Cove, Nassau, New York 29 Nov 1692. Maher (Gorton) Coles was born about 1642/46 and died possibly in 1731.

Mahershallalhashbaz was born about 1638. She passed away in 1692.
