About Maj. (CSA), Anatole Placide Avegno

Anatole served as a Major in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War; and died in 1862 of a leg wound he received in the Battle of Shiloh. He was the commander of the Avegno Zouaves of New Orleans, a cosmopolitan battalion which had French, Spanish, Mexican, Irish, Italian, and Chinese soldiers amongst its six companies.

He formed the "Avegno Zouaves" Company I, 14th Louisiana Infantry. The six companies of the Governor Guards' Battalion ("Avegno's Zouaves") combined with four independent companies to form the 13th Louisiana in September of 1861.

Married 4 May 1857 in New Orleans, Marie-Virginie de Ternant, daughter of Claude Vincent de Ternant III (1786-1842)and Marie-Virginie Trahan (1818-1887).
