About Major Ebenezer Adams, Sr.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for RHODE ISLAND with the rank of CAPTAIN. DAR Ancestor # A000454

HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF STONINGTON, County of New London, Connecticut, from its first settlement in 1649 to 1900, by Richard Anson Wheeler, New London, CT, 1900, p. 492

Ebenezer was the son of Joseph Adams and Mary Crandall of Westerly, Rhode Island. He was married first, about 1763, to Martha Taylor, the daughter of Job Taylor and Sarah Monroe of Charlestown, Rhode Island. They had six children together. Following Martha's death, Ebenezer married about 1776 to Sarah Fanning.

Ebenezer served as a captain of artillery in 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. The following year, he was one of five officers involved in the capture of British General Prescott. In 1774 Ebenezer appears on the military census in Westerly, RI, but in 1777 he was in Charlestown, RI, and still there on the 1782 census. He is not found on the 1790 census.

The actual burial location for Ebenezer has been in dispute. A tombstone was installed for him at Hist Cem SK #31, which can be found at this link: Major Ebenezer Adams tombstone. However, James N. Arnold, the great Rhode Island records compiler, surmised that he was buried here because he lived and died on this property that at one time belonged to William Potter. That is most likely why the DAR opted to install his monument here.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jun 19 2019, 21:30:54 UTC
