Maj. Gen. Beaumont Bonaparte Buck

Beaumont Buck graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1885. He served in World War I. He retied as a U.S. Army Major General.

Beaumont Bonaparte Buck, army officer, was born in Mississippi on January 16, 1860. He was brought to Texas by his parents about 1870, attended school in Dallas, and joined the Texas militia in 1878. He graduated from the United States Military Academy on February 16, 1885, was assigned to the infantry on June 14, and was stationed at Fort McIntosh. There, on November 20, 1886, he married Kate Bernard, the daughter of his commanding officer, Col. R. F. Bernard. They had three children.

Buck was stationed at Fort Ringgold in December 1886, was promoted to first lieutenant in the Nineteenth Infantry in May 1892, and in February 1898 was stationed at Fort Sherman, Idaho, on recruiting duty. In May 1898 he was sent back to Texas as a major in the Second Texas Volunteers. After an honorable discharge on November 9, 1898, he reentered the service as a captain in the Sixteenth Infantry in March 1899 and spent eight months in the Philippine Islands. In 1900–01 he conducted army personnel to the Philippines and Egypt. He was stationed at Fort William McKinley at Manila from 1907 to 1913.

He was married a second time on December 30, 1908, and became the father of four children. Buck was promoted to major in 1908 and to lieutenant colonel in 1914. He was sent to France with the Twenty-eighth Infantry in 1916 and became a major general in August 1918. He had received the Distinguished Service Cross in 1909 and after his World War I service was awarded the Medal of the French Legion of Honor, the Croix de Guerre, and other honors.

He retired on June 10, 1925, and made his home in San Antonio. He headed the San Antonio Bicentennial Commission in 1932 and was a founder and president of the State Association of Texas Pioneers. In 1935 he wrote his reminiscences under the title Memories of Peace and War. He married Mrs. Virginia Rodgers in September 1949. Buck died in San Antonio on February 10, 1950, and was buried in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. He was survived by his widow, two sons, and four daughters.
