About Maj. John Welsh

NO, HIS PARENTS ARE ***NOT*** KNOWN!!!

Bogus connection to Welch of Ayr keeps reappearing but it is FAKE!!!

Birth place UNKNOWN. Birth year a GUESSTIMATE. There is NO PROOF.

Anne (Grosse) shown below was the widow of Roger Grosse, haven't seen any documentation that her maiden name was also Grosse:

Major John Welsh was an early settler and officeholder in Anne Arundel County, he served as a Justice in 1667 and 1676. He served as Sheriff 1678-79. He acquired several plantations including "Preston's Enlargement".

He was born England. He married Anne (Grosse) circa 1665 England. They had perhaps 7 children: Sylvester, John (qv), Benjamin, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Damaris.. Major John Welsh survived Anne, deceased circa 1675. Major John Welsh then married Mary Wyatt. Major John Welsh died before 3 March 1683 Anne Arundel Co, MD; will proved.
______________________________________________________________________________
John Welsh was born about 1605 (???) in England. By 1670, he married widowed Anne Grosse. Two children were born to them, Sylvester and John Welsh, Jr. She died before 1675, when Major Welsh married Mary Wyatt. Mary was the daughter of Damaris Wyatt, second wife of Nicholas Wyatt, of Virginia. John and Mary had several children, one of them being Damaris Welsh who married, secondly, Thomas Stockett in 1700. The Stocketts became the parents of Mary, who married Joseph Brewer in 1736.

Major Welsh arrived in Maryland prior to 1668, when he was a "Gentleman Justice" of Anne Arundel County. He was Commissioner of the County Court in 1667. He was Commissioned Justice for several years and was a member of the Quorum in 1676. In 1677 or 1678, he was appointed High Sheriff of Anne Arundel County. He was considered the most important official in the county, responsible only to the "Proprietor". In 1678, there was a period of Indian warfare, the "Nanticoke War". Major Welsh was responsible to suppress any Indian uprisings. As recognition for his military valor, he was granted 1000 acres which was named "Three Sisters". This was a great honor to have bestowed upon him.

In 1681, a new Indian warfare outbreak occurred. Indians killed one of Welsh's servants and two Englishmen on his plantation. The Indians also attempted to enter the home of some of the other settlers. It appears that Major Welsh had gained the reputation of an Indian fighter. He was held in high esteem for his leadership abilities and his character.

In 1682, Major Welsh was chosen as one of twenty four commissioners, "men of the highest importance, the civil and military officers of the counties", to represent Anne Arundel County in the initiation of the "Act for the Advancement of Trade". Major Welsh was the fifth name on the list. He died the following year in 1683. He was considered one of the "worthies in American history who helped to lay the foundation of our nation as it is today."

Biography

Came from England in 1642 to Anne Arundel Co., MD when he was 19 years old. (???)

MAJOR JOHN WELSH, HIGH SHERIFF, OF A. A. CO. In 1667, Major Welsh was a Commissioner of Anne Arundel County. In 1675, as the husband of Mrs. Anne Grosse, widow of Hon. Roger Grosse, he was executor of the large Grosse estate, and summoned John Grosse, Richard Snowden and his wife, Elizabeth, lately Elizabeth Grosse, Roger Grosse, Jr., William Grosse and Francis Grosse, in settlement of the estate. Mrs. Elizabeth (Grosse) Welsh was the mother of Silvester and John Welsh, Jr. The latter was known later as Major and Colonel John. She died before 1675, when Major Welsh married Mary, stepdaughter of Nicholas Wyatt, and half-sister of Sarah (Wyatt) Dorsey, wife of Colonel Edward. In 1679, Major Welsh was one of "The Quorum," and was High Sheriff in 1678 and 1679. In the former year, he was defendant against John Homewood in a suit against his deputy. In 1683, Major Welsh was a commissioner for building the courthouse, and in the same year, a commissioner for the advancement of trade in Anne Arundel. In short, Major Welsh was continuously in the public service. His will, of 1686, left his South River lands, " Arnold's Grey," to Silvester and John, because they came through his Grosse wife. Benjamin Welsh was installed in the South River homestead. The four daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Damaris Welsh, were joint heirs of his lands upon the Gunpowder. " Unto my wife, Mary, ' Preston's Enlargement,' near River Dam, Herring Creek. I give to my brother, Henry Welsh, my tobacco box, silver headed cane, broadcloth suit and one thousand acres of land." This brother I could not find in our records. Though named an executor, the estate was settled by son, Sylvester, and his widow, Mary, then wife of James Ellis.

His name was Welsh, not Welch.

Nothing is known for certain about the ancestry of Major John Welsh. One researcher on genealogy.com claimed to have traced his line back to a grandfather Edward Welsh of Peterborough, Northamptonshire, UK (born c. 1574). If true, he cannot possibly be descended from John Welch of Ayr. http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/welsh/1193/
