Notes for SYLVESTER WELSH,CAPTAIN:

  • *********************************************************** According to the register of St. Margaret's Westminster Parish, John Howard died on December 6, 1702. The inventory of his personal estate indicated that he was a merchant and was perhaps the first of the Howards to acquire great wealth. His estate was appraised at #1,265/6/8 by Sylvester Welsh and Cornelius Howard.
    • ********************************************************** Called before the Council to answer charge of selling the county powder to Clarke's accomplices. Captain Welsh replied that he did spare Daniel Wells powder, but "it was his own"
      • ********************************************************* This was plausible, since the Welsh and Wells families were related. Thomas Wells and Captain John Welsh, brother of Silvester, were brothers-in-law,having married daughters of Gerrard Hopkins (Annapolis Wills,13,720)
        • ******************************************************** Captain Welsh's explanations were not excepted and he was " discharged from his duties "
          • ************************************************ Are given as "Heads of Households" in 1785 Census in St. Stevens Parish,Northumberland County,Virginiain McAllister's " Virginia Militia in the Revoluntary War " page 172. In the Va. census (1785) "Sylvester Welch, Benjamin Welch, Benjamin Welch Jr., Elizabeth. Welch, Isaac Welch and Sylvester Welch (2)," are given as Heads of Families in St. Stevens Parish, Northumberland County,Virginia. In McAllister's " Virginia Militia in the Revoluntary War." page 172, it is stated that Sylvester Welch, Sr., page 70 in 1832, enlisted in 1777 in Northumberland in the 1st Virginia Artillery, serving 3 yrs., under Colonel Charles Harrison and others.
            • ****************************************************** A Sylvester Welch was chief engineer of Kentucky from 1837 to 1840 (History of Frankfort Cemetery, page 72).
              • ***************************************************** Captain Silvester Welsh,Sr. Captain Silvester Welsh (Maj. John1), was born abt.1670-71. " The Ancient City," page 83, says: About 1705 " Captain Silvester Welsh was called before the Council to answer the charge of selling the county powder to Clarke's accomplices. Captain Welch replied that he did spare Daniel Wells powder, but it was his own." This was plausible since the Wells and Welsh families were related. Thomas Wells and Colonel John Welsh, brother of Silvester, were brothers-in-law, having married daughters of Gerrard Hopkins (Annapolis Wills, 13.720). Also Damaris, sister of Silvester, had married Thomas Stockett Jr. whose mother was Mary Wells, daughter of Major Richard Wells, one of Cromwell's governors of Maryland. (As to Clarke, see Scharf's Hist., v. 1, page 422). However, Captain Welsh's explanations were not accepted (doubtless his sympathies were with the deposed Proprietary), and he was " discharged from his command." He married abt.1695, Eleanor(???), and had: Silvester, 11.14.1696 (A. H. 20); Anne, 1701-1703 (Ib. 54, 59); Eleanor, 6.17.1704 (Ib. 67); Lucia, 10.13.1706 (Ib. 74).
