Montgomery Pike Berry (ca. 1824 or 1828 - December 28, 1898) was a collector of customs for the United States Department of the Treasury, and from June 14, 1877 to August 13, 1877 was the highest-ranking federal official in the Department of Alaska, making him the de facto governor of the territory.

Berry was born in Kentucky, and served in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, rising to the rank of Major. He was also sheriff of Grant County, Oregon and Superintendent of the Oregon State Penitentiary before President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him as collector of customs in March 1874. He lived in Sitka, Alaska until his death.


Montgomery Pike Berry was born in Kentucky. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Ft. Levenworth, Kansas and other posts.He was a veteran of the Mexican war but acquired his rank of Major from having raised three companies during the civil campaign. He later moved to Wasco County Oregon. He was elected the first Sheriff of Grant County, Oregon in John Day. He and his wife Isabella later moved to Salem, Oregon where he served as Superintendent of the Oregon State Penitentiary 1866-1870. He was appointed by President U.S.Grant as Collector of Customs in Sitka, Alaska March 16, 1874. He loved Sitka and lived there until his death. His wife Isabella died in 1880. His second wife Jane Eddon Berry died in 1896 in Oregon. His son Montgomery P. Berry, Jr. died in 1900 in Oregon. He is buried in Section K, Plot 2, Sitka National Cemetery 803 Sawmill Road, Sitka Borough, Alaska
