About Maj. Nathan Starr, Sr.

Maj. Nathan Starr, Sr. was, along with son Nathan Jr., what Connecticut State Historian Walt Woodward describes as "one of the foremost arms manufacturers in the United States, producing not only swords, sabers, and cutlasses, but muskets and rifles as well." The Starrs produced swords, both functional and ceremonial, for the War of 1812 through the Civil War. They also produced sabres and cutlasses. Starting in 1824, after Nathan Sr.'s death, the company also produced rifles and muskets.

Starr served as a soldier for Connecticut in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He served first under Capt. Joseph Churchill and Col. Comfort Sage, and then in the 3rd Battalion under Gen. Wadsworth. His Daughters of the American Revolution ancestor number is A109111.

Note: Sources conflict regarding whether his date of death was 20 July 1821 or 29 July 1821. The DAR uses 29 July 1821, which this profile uses as well.
