Co. K, 80th OVI. Enrolled 7 Jan. 1862. Drowned in the Mississippi River.
“We learn that Richard Lanning of Gilmore, and late Wagon Master in the 80th Ohio, was drowned in the Mississippi week before last, on his way home from Vicksburg. Our informant states that one evening Lanning remarked that he would occupy a certain empty berth in case no one else occupied it. The next morning his hat was found in the berth but he and another man were missing.--It is said that the next morning a third man was missing from the boat. Lanning was accompanying his brother soldiers home and had, it is said, some money with him, which leads to a suspicion that there has been foul play. We give the report as we receive it.”
