About Maj. (USA) Harry White, US Rep, PA

US Congressman. He graduated from Princeton in 1854 and became an attorney. In 1861 he joined the Union Army as Major of the Sixty-seventh Pennsylvania Infantry, serving until February, 1865, and attaining the rank of Brevet Brigadier General. While in the Army he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate and attended sessions in the winter of 1862-1863. In 1863 he was captured and held at Libby Prison. With White unable to attend, the Senate was deadlocked with 16 Democrats and 16 Republicans. Refused parole, he resigned so a successor could be elected and the deadlock broken. After the Civil War he remained in the National Guard, serving as Major General and commander of Pennsylvania's Twenty-first Division, practiced law, and was active in several businesses, including a glass company and a bank. White also returned to the state Senate, serving from 1865 to 1874, and presiding as Speaker in his final term. In 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Republican and served two terms, 1877 to 1881. In 1884 He was elected Indiana County Judge, and served two 10 year terms, afterwards returning to his law practice and business interests.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 12 2019, 18:53:25 UTC
