Major Charles de Havilland b. circa 1787, d. 23 November 1844

Father: Sir Peter de Havilland b. 1747

Major Charles de Havilland was born circa 1787.
He was the son of Sir Peter de Havilland.
He married Martha Saumarez, daughter of Richard Saumarez and Martha Le Mesurier, on 7 October 1819. He died on 23 November 1844.

Charles de Havilland, son of Peter de Havilland (Bailiff of Guernsey) and Carterette Fiott, was born 7 Sep 1786 on Guernsey. He married 8 Oct 1819 to Martha Saumarez, daughter of Dr. Richard Saumarez & Martha Le Mesurier. They had five children. He moved to England with his family in 1830.

"Entered the army in 1813, served in the Maltese Corps, and the 8th Regiment foot; was afterwards a Brevet-Major. He died in 1844, and was buried at Kensal Green, where a tomb and epitaph are erected to his memory."

From a letter by Charles addressed to his father "Peter de Havilland, High Bailiff of the Island of Guernsey," headed "Verdun, 27 May 1813," while he was a prisoner of Napoleon in France:

My dearest Father, It grieves me to the heart to find myself obliged to destroy all the hopes you had conceived...to get me those certificates to tell you they are scarcely any use in this country... A French Admiral who has a son, a midshipman in England, tried to get him exchanged...but notwithstanding the hopes that had been given him...he received a very civil letter saying the Emperor would not hearken to any private exchange... Adieu best of Fathers, I wish I could embrace you all. Charles de Havilland.
