   Malcolm Allen was a first settler in the gorge of the James River above Pattonsburg. He first appears in the year 1754 when he entered 285 acres of land on a small branch of the James River and 200 acres on the north side of James River. The location of this land was in a "pocket" of limestone at the western end of Purgatory Mountain. The spring selected was from the river bubbling up from the foot of a small limestone shelf under the steep part of the mountain. Malcolm constructed his house on this shelf of rock immediately above the spring, not over it. A hundred yards away he found an ideal place for a back barn on the rim of a broad crater which was drained towards the spring branch at the south. Around the home site there was enough gently sloping land to furnish ample fields for an attractive plantation. He later acquired lands on Craigs Creek and Pattersons Creek. He brought his wife, Mary, and several small children from Prince Edward County, but through the Indian War from 1756 to 1762, he was reported in Augusta as "not in the Country".

In 1762 he and his son Hugh, were added to the tithables of Augusta. From the records of Augusta and Botetourt counties we see that he was an active public spirited man, and from the ruins of the buildings where he lived we believe that he protected his family and lived well.
Excerpt from "Following the McClures--Donegal to Botetourt" by Joseph W. McClure, et al, p. 47: "Malcolm was very active in frontier affairs, his name appears frequently in colonial records. His father was Malcolme Allane who married Mary Deane in 1699 in Kilbernie, County Ayr, Scotland. Malcolm first settled on the James River in 1754 ... The parents of Mary were massacred by the Shawnees during a raid on Kerr's Creek in 1763."
From Kegley's Virginia Frontier, pg. 483-4: Malcolm Allen was a "first" settler in the gorge of the James River above Pattonsburg, Augusta County, Virginia. In 1754 he entered 285 acres of land on a small branch of James River and 200 acres on the north side of James River at the western end of Purgatory Mountain.

   He later acquired lands on Craigs Creek and Pattersons Creek.

From Related Families of Botetourt Co., pg. 267-8: Malcolm Allen was one of the first settlers of Botetourt Co. who, in 1754, acquired land along the James about 9 miles above present Buchanan, and later acquired lands on Craigs Creek and Pattersons Creek. He may have gone back to Prince Edward Co. during the Indian Wars 1756-1762 since he was reported "not found" in Augusta Co. during that period.

   By Emma Siggins White." I was just passing it along. Upon further digging there is no evidence to support her statement that Malcolm was a son of James Allen and Margaret Anderson. As a matter of a fact. A book published 5 years prior to hers by her husband and written and researched by a "Almira White" sister or sister in law to her husband, Titled Ancestors of John Barber White.

   It looks as if Almira was actually the one who obtained the information from Mr. Oscar Pyle the grandson of Malcolm Allen and Mary Cunningham. And there are a few things added to what he reported to Almira White in Emma's book, that did not come from him.

   First there is no mention in Almira's book of who Malcolms parents were. There is no mention of who the wife of Hugh Allen (son of Malcolm) was. (in Emmas book she had put Jane Turk) And Almira White mentions that Malcolm witnessed Col. Poages will but does not call him his brother in law.

   The Autobiography of Allen Trimble who was the son of Jane Allen Trimble, daughter of James and Margaret Anderson, do not mention Malcolm as a brother to his mother.

   The rest of the list seems to be accurate though. "

Note from one researcher: she is descended from Hannah McClure and David Worley, both grandchildren of Malcolm Allen. On 11 March 1778 in Botetourt County, Mary McClure relinquishes all legacies in her husband's will. Malcolm and Hannah McClure choose Malcolm Allen as guardian.
1757 in Augusta County Court: Maxwell vs. Allen .... John Maxwell, Captain of a Company in 1756, called Allen to go against the Indianas, but Allen refused and Maxwell dued "qui tam Malcomb Allen." Maxwell denies he made out the writ.
16 Jan 1760, Augusta County: Malcom Allen witness for James Cunningham's will; proved 1765.
Botetourt County Wills, Virginia State Library at Richmond, Will Book A., page 311-312: Malcolm's will (dated 12 DEc 1791 and proved 15 Feb 1792) mentions sons (Hugh, Robert, Moses, and John) and daughters (Rebecca, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, and Sally). To son Hugh, first part of survey where he now lives. To son Robert, the other part of the patten land where he now lives. To son Moses, 90 acre survey known as Grassy Bottom and part of survey as high as where the old path forked to go down the Lick Run and the others along Poplar Hollow. To daughters Rebecca, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, and Sally, five shillings each, having received their portion before. To son John, all the rest of the estate, real and personal. Executor: son John. Witnesses: David Henderson and John Gi8llespie. Signed: Malcolm Allen Senior. Estate: 4 slaves, 1 horse, 9 cattle, 5 sheep, 6 weaning _____, household furniture and plantation utensils.

In the name of God Amen, I Malcom Allen of the County of Botetourt & State of Virginia being sick and weak of Body but of perfect mind and memory Thanks be to God the giver of all Mercys, and calling to mind the Mortality of my Body and knowing that it is aoynted for all men once to die first of all I comitt my soul to God who Gave it and my Body To be Buried in the Earth at the Discreten of my Exicutors hereafter menchened, in the faith that at the General Resurection he will Raise it an Imortal body and Reunite soul and body Together and by the Rightusness of Christ Being freely aplyd will make me to triumph in his Glory and sing his praises through an Endless Eternity, and as for whot Wordley Estate it has pleased God to bestow upon me I shall Dispose of in Manner and from as followeth (Viz) I order all my Just and Lawfull Debts to be paid.
Item I give and bequith to my sun Hugh that part of the survey where he now Dweles to be layd of at the Est end Beginning at a corner marked on Two white oaks and a Locast neir to a hallow on the Est End of a (fiel) of Robt and to Run a north curve to the out side line of the bequea.
