About Malcolm John Marchant

Following notes are taken from Noel Marchant's "History of the production of the Marchant family tree Re: MALCOLM MARCHANT's part in Anglo-Boer war in South Africa. A library book mentions "Another contingent from South Australia, the Eighth Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse included 66 Marchant, Malcolm John, Private. They left Port Adelaide per St Andrew 26 May 1902 and arrived at Durban 19 June 1902. They saw nothing of the war and left Durban 1 July 1902 in the Manchester Merchant and returned to South Australia on 24 July 1902 via Albany. They disbanded 9 August 1902" Then on p.16: " In 1905, William Arthur Marchant was negotiating with the West Australian Government for a lease of an area eight miles N.N.W of Badjebub. Lot 3541 was to be in he name of George Lavington Marchant and lots 3535-3539 and 3542 in the name of Malcolm John Marchant. The application seemingly lapsed. Both William Arthur Marchant and Malcolm John (Jack) Marchant were farmers." Malcolm John was almost 74 years of age when on 8 February 1957 at the Burra he was called to higher duties. His widow, born at Dashwood's Gully in South Australia on 5 December 1892 had fourteen years of widowhood, lasting until 10 June 1971.
