About María Pilares
In 1936, Maria Pilares, a relative of the deceased General Manuel Tinio claimed that her hacienda included the lands of small landowners of San Ricardo, Talavera, Nueva Ecija. She went to court and said that because she had been paying the taxes she was the owner. She also requested that the peasant families using the land be evicted. The farmers fought for their rights, won the case, and named the land they occupied Bagong Sikat.
