Biography

Markham/Marcom Manning was a son of John Manning and Ann Deal, born around 1730-35 in Norfolk County, Virginia. He was executor of his father's will, dated 1758, by which he inherited a negro man, Tom, a negro woman, Sue, and a negro, Jack, who was given to his father John by his grandfather John Manning.<ref>"Manning Family," citing Norfolk County Will Book 1: 24-25.</ref> On 20 April 1761, John Holland, planter of Pitt County, North Carolinasold to Markham Manning, shipwright of Norfolk County, Virginia, for 40 pounds proclamation money, 300 acres which was part of a Granville grant to John Holland of 24 November 1761, a tract on the north side of [Conetoe] Swamp, joining Stear Pen Branch, Solomon Asbell, &excluding the plantation where Thomas Powell lived; wit. John Lewelling, Joseph Taylor, William Borden [Barden].<ref>Tyrell County Deed Book 4:90.</ref> Marcom appraised his father's estate on 18 February 1762 with his brother, John Manning and Richard Ballentine, William Owens, & John Owens,<ref>"Manning Family," citing Norfolk Co. Appraisement Book 1: pg. 67;reel 82.</ref> and he audited both his father John's and his grandfather John's estates on 18 November 1762.<ref>"Manning Family," citing Norfolk Co. Audit Book 1, reel 89, pp. 65-67.</ref> In 1764, he sold his land on Julian's Creek to his brother John and removed to Tyrell County, North Carolina,<ref>"Manning Family," citing Manning Family Genealogy Forum, Electronic Library, 13 October 2005.</ref> the part of which that was ceded to the newly formed Martin Countyin 1774. Keziah Ballentine

It is generally accepted that Keziah Ballentine, daughter of William and Judy (Spivey) Ballentine, was Marcom's wife. Evidence to support this has not yet been found. William Ballentine's will, dated 19 November 1747 in Norfolk, names his daughter Keziah as Keziah Ballentine, and conditions his bequest to be effected when she came of age, so they must not have been married before that date.
