Judy Hugg Grimes, 17432 Yellowstone, Yorba Linda, California 92886, e-mailed this researcher the following copy of a handwritten letter from Johnson Collins to his aunt Margaret L. Pounds Collins. Judy has no envelope or postmark, but the letter was written from an army camp in Arkansas in February 1863. (Question marks (?) indicate inability to decifer handwriting.)

"Camp Near Pine Bluff, Ark. February 5th 1863. Dearest Aunt and Uncle and friends. Afteralby(?) love and respect to you all. I hope to inform you that I am not well at this time nor has not been in nearly four months. The other boys is in tolerable good health and I hope these lines may find you all in good health and spirits. Ile tell you that I received your letter the morning of the 20th Dec. and was glad to hear from you once more for I don't get no letters Nowbarilly(?) from home nor no where else. The last letter I got from home was the 7th of Dec. They was all well then.

Ile tell you aunt that I never knew what trouble and sicknefs and distrefs was before in life. Ile say that if it was not for the trust which I have in our great and merciful God, I should bea lost forever. I feel like if I cared to our saviour not his word than a great many then I see I should forever lost trust (?). I hope the lost will have Miroyonns ___(?) and we will get home. (?) to our wives and children and parents is My prairs daily your May Shore.

I will tell you that the snow is lieing on the ground now about five or six inches deep. It is the 5th. Snow we have had since we have bin in this state and I bin sick all the time. (?) but I hope the lord will bea with Me and Restore Me to health again and (?) I hope to Reach heaven safe whiare trouble will b__(?) More.

Ile say that uncle Robert got a letter from Newton about a month ago...he was well and still at Richmond. I would bea very glad to see him shore.

I have nothing more worth attention to write you at present only I hope we all meet in Texas before long. I hope the lord will smile on us in Mercy and send us home at last soon. Nothing More you Must give My Respects to Uncle and all my friends and Recieve them yourself write to me as soon as this comes to hand and let me know the Newse by this time.

Isom Pounds,Cheraw Reserves from 2 US Presidents - Former Indentured til 21 Native Apprentice as shoemaker per transcript in media section; of Old Cheraw Hanover to Little PeDee community tied to Moses Floyd Methodist Episcopal work in Horry Co; was First Southern Baptist Circuit Preacher in the Florida Parishes and Margurite Parker Yarborough Pounds.

Margaret Ellison married William M Collins. Together they had the following children: Margaret Louise Seal.

She died on November 8, 1895.

MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 5 Margaret Ellison Pounds was the daughter of Isom Pounds and Margaret Yarborough. She married William M Collins November 27, 1931 in Hinds County, Mississippi. They were the parents of eight children, the third of which was my great grandfather William Newton Collins/aka/Andrew William Collvins.

Margaret died while living in Dekalb, Bowie County, Texas and is buried there, but as no stone has been found, I am in the process of trying to determine the exact place.
