Biography

Rev. Joseph Edward Pounds was born on March 1, 1818 in Cheraw, Marion Co. , MS, United States. His parents were Rev. Isom Pounds /Cheraw and Founder of Cheraw, MS, Margaret Parker Pounds. He was a Baptist Minister.

Joseph married Elizabeth Keller on January 4, 1838 in St. Tammany, Louisiana, United States. Together they had the following children: Caroline Grace (Pounds) Lott; Ardell Williams (Pounds); Johnson Bruce Pounds; Joseph Lycurgus. "Curk" Pounds; Bony Pounds; Sarah Elizabeth E. Lott.

He died on September 17, 1882 in Cheraw, Marion Co., MS and was buried in September 1882 in Lott-Pound Cemetery, MS .

As recorded in "Baptist and Methodist Records of Florida Parishes of Louisiana, Volume 3, 1989" by Donna Burge Adams, the minutes of The Eastern Louisiana Baptist Association acknowledged both Joseph E. Pounds and Isham J. Pounds as licentiate ministers as early as 1850. According to "Marriage Records, Marion County, Mississippi", the credentials of Joseph E. Pounds were vouched for by Jesse Crawford and Calvin Magee, Ministers of Gospel, at Antioch Church on November 19, 1854 and recorded on September 20, 1855, thereby authorizing him to preach. Joseph served the Florida Parishes of Louisiana as a Baptist minister after 1855. In 1856, Bro. Joseph E. Pounds preached the constituting sermon (first sermon after official formation of the church) at the State Line Baptist Church in Marion County, Mississippi. As recorded in "Baptist and Methodist Records of Florida Parishes of Louisiana, Volume 3, 1989" by Donna Burge Adams, on July 27, 1861, Bro. Joseph E. Pounds and Sis. Elizabeth Pounds moved their church letters from the Antioch Church to State Line Baptist Church. As recorded in "Baptist and Methodist Records of Florida Parishes of Louisiana, Volume 3, 1989" by Donna Burge Adams, on May 21, 1864, "Bro. J. E. Pound" requested letters of dismissal from the State Line Baptist Church for himself, his wife, and daughter; however in June, 1864, the order granting letters to Joseph, his wife and daughter were rescinded, with no reason being recorded. Also from the same source, we found that in 1865, Reverend Joseph Pounds and Reverend Powell re-established the Half Moon Baptist Church on the Bogue Chitto River, north of Franklinton, Louisiana. Joseph's household was first enumerated on the 1850 census for St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and then enumerated on the 1860 census for Marion County, Mississippi, recording Joseph as a Clergyman, Baptist, born in Mississippi, who owned real estate valued at $1,000 and a personal estate valued at $500. He was enumerated again on the 1870 census for Marion County, Mississippi (page 3, line 16, family 18), as being a 52 year old farmer, living with his 51 year old wife, Elizabeth, born in Mississippi, and his 12 year old daughter, Sarah E, born in Mississippi also; Joseph had $300 worth of real estate and $260 of real property. These records indicate that his wife, Elizabeth, could not read or write, nor could his daughter, Sarah. "Baptist and Methodist Records of Florida Parishes of Louisiana, Volume 3, 1989" by Donna Burge Adams indicates that Joseph E. Pounds was active in the religious community as late as 1882, as recorded in the 1883 minutes of The Eastern Louisiana Baptist Association which indicated he was serving as a messenger from the Mississippi River Association. Joseph and Elizabeth are buried in the Lott Memorial Cemetery of the New Hope Community, three miles west of Cheraw, Marion County, Mississippi. Joseph's headstone was erected by the Magee's Creek Association.

MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 3 Joseph was the son of Isom or Isham Pounds b. 1775 in S.C. and Margaret Parker b. 1786 in SC. Joseph's brother Rev. Isom Pounds #52380645 is buried in the Pounds Poole Cemetery in Washington Parish, LA. Isom's wife Sarah Kellar Pounds is also buried in there.

Joseph & Isom married sisters (Elizabeth & Sarah Keller/Kellar). Both men were ministers. Elizabeth & Sarah were daughters of Henry and Sophia Page Keller/Kellar.

Note found in the St. Tammany Farmer Sept. 30, 1882 calls into question the actual day of Rev. Pounds death:

Mr. A. L. Carpenter, and old and highly respected citizen of this parish, died at his residence on Pearl River on Friday, the 22d inst. Rev. Joseph Pounds, Baptist Minister, of Marion county, Miss., also died on the same night. The Baptist Church and the community at large sustain a severe loss in the death of the above-named estimable gentlemen.

*Miscellaneous Note: Kathryn Pounds Fournet was fortunate enough to copy pages of family record from an old Bible which Mary Arizona Knight Pounds had in her possession. The first entry in the Bible was dated 1818. "POUNDS" was spelled phonetically as "POUNS" and then suddenly changed to "POUNDS" in 1858. Kathy relates that as of 8/11/96, she does not have solid information as to the port of entry for the Pounds family but believes that it was Virginia or North Carolina, in or around 1740. An individual listed as "SAMUEL POUND (PVT.)" served in the Revolutionary War and may have been an ancestor.
