Biography

Margaret Cheney was born on 20 November 1628 in England and died 29 Sep 1678 at age 49 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, American Colonies.

She was the daughter of William Cheney and Margaret Unknown.

Her family came to America in 1635.

In April 1651 Margaret, at age 22, married Deacon Thomas Hastings, in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; his 2nd wife.  She was the mother of all his children.   

On 12 March 1682/83 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Margaret Cheney was mentioned in the will of her husband, Deacon Thomas Hastings.

On 15 May 1686 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, Margaret Cheney was mentioned in the will of her mother, Margaret Cule.

  • (1) Thomas born July 1, 1652, died July 23, 1712,
    • illegitimate son Thomas born 1671, who lived first with Deacon John Morse, then William Hagar Sr, and then William Hagar Jr though the age of 21 (m. May 31, 1693, to Sarah Tarball of Newton, where he resided - will dated March 8, 1737 mentions her, daughters Sarah Pond and Mary Dike, and sons David, Josiah, and Ebenezer)
  • (2) John, born March 4, 1654, died March 28, 1718,
  •  (3) William, born August 8, 1655, drowned August, 1669,
  • (4) Joseph, born September 12, 1657, died October 7, 1695,
  • (5) Benjamin August 9, 1659, died December 18, 1711 in Hatfield
    • m. Elizabeth Graves (b. March 6, 1662, to Isaac and Mary of Hartford, later Hatfield Mass, granddaughter to Thomas Graves of Hartford who died at Hadly in November 1662).
    • son Benjamin preceded him in death February 8, 1697.
  • (6) Nathaniel September 25, 1661, died December 25, 1694
    • estate administered by his widow Mary and brother Samuel on April 1, 1695. Lists two children: Nathanial (bap. June 26, 1698, a mariner whose will was dated Dec. 6, 1714, and proved April 1, 1717, mentioning mother Mary and brother John), and John (bap. June 26, 1698).
  • (7) Hepzibah, born January 31, 1664,
    • m. June 2, 1680, to Deacon William Bond
  •  (8) Samuel, born March 12, 1666, died 1723.
    • John Nevinson became his guardian in October 1685.
