Norman Eugene McIndoo, who did research on the McIndoo from 1925 until about 1949 and he wrote a book "History of John McIndoo and Charity Heady and Their Descendants", Typed and Bound by the Author ecember 1949, Second Edition. In this book are a few things about Robert Thomas McKee. Norman was a little different in how he wrote his book but in most cases he did give references. The following are things he found about the Civil War and Robert Thomas McKee and some personal items that he (Norman) added himself. Robert Thomas McKee was his uncle. Page numbers are from his book unless otherwise indicated.

(Pg. 37) A history of Owen County (Counties of Clay and Owen, Blanchard, Charles. 1884) gives the names of the McIndoos of that county but omitted the McKees. The total number of soldiers and recruits enrolled in the 11 companies in Owen County was 1355 of which 84 were killed and 132 died of disease. Our relatives were volunteers in volunteer regiments but toward the close of the war these regiments contained a large number of drafted men who had replaced the original volunteers. The word "volunteer" is often used in the official records to honor these soldiers and to distinguish them from the drafted ones. The official enlistments of our relatives (Illinois, adjutant general of the state of, report of. Vols. 2, 5, 6, and 7) have been published, while information in their military, medical, and pension records remains unpublished, and all these documents are now housed in the new National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. Their military and pension records were carefully examined.

(pg. 39) Robert Thomas McKee (Vol. 5 of Indiana, Adjutant General of the state of, report of, pg. 35) of Freedom, Indiana, was mustered in as a Corporal on September 20, 1861, in Company B, 31th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers for 3 years, and was honorably discharged September 15, 1864 being in service 2 years, 11 months and 25 days. Description of Robert or Uncle Tom as we called him: Age 27, height 5 ft. 7 1/4 inches, complexion light, eyes grey, hair light, born in Kentucky, farmer. He was promoted to Sergeant on October 1, 1862, and was made 1st Sergeant on January 7, 1863; was in the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, in which he was wounded September 19, 1863. He was captured and made prisoner the next day and was paroled at Chattanooga, Tennessee, September 29 to October 2, 1863. He was in the hospital at Nashville, Tennessee, in November and December of 1863, and was sent to his regiment May 19, 1864. In 1862 while supporting heavy artillery in battle of Shilo his hearing was injured and in battle of Chickamauga he was shot in right ankle and hip. On May 24, 1882, he was pensioned, and died October 5, 1913, and was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery.

pg. 43) Uncle Robert Thomas McKee said that in 1872 he bought and lived a farm not far from that of his cousin John (John P. McKee), but in October 1898 retired and moved to Lyons, Indiana. The 1880 census shows that both McKee Families, including all children, lived in Washington Township. Uncle Tom lived on a large farm two miles south of Lyons. He was more prosperous and better-to-do than his neighbors.

(pg. 46) Robert had 2 other wives after Margaret Jane, and the third one outlived him.
