Margaret de Verdon and John Pilkington had nine children:
"7. Margaret, who married, 1st, Nicholas Griffin, who died 15 Hen. VI (1437) leaving 5 sons; and secondly Sir Thomas Savile [Savell] of Howley and Thornhill, knight of the shire for co. York, in 1442, by whom there were four children. Her daughter Anna Savile, married Sir John Butler, knight of Brewsey, Baron of Warrington, who was murdered, it is said, out of revenge, at the instigation of Thomas Stanley, first Earl of Derby."

Margaret, the wife of Sir John, died 28th April,
1436, as shown by the Inquisition post mortem for
co. Suffolk, dated 21st February, 15 Henry VI ;
and, as already stated, the date of Sir John's death
was 8th March, 1421. They had issue nine chil-
dren.
1. Sir John, of whom we shall treat shortly as
descent VIII, but who died without issue, and was
succeeded by his nephew Sir Thomas, the eldest
son of Sir John's brother Edmund.
2. Edmund, to whom reference is made later as
descent VIIIa, on page 23.
3. A son, who is said to have died young. 20
4. Roger, who had no issue.
5. Robert, whose eldest son was Sir John, of
Wakefield (treated of on page 29), from whom
the Yorkshire branch trace their descent, though
through a natural son of Sir John.
Robert is named in fine levied 8 Henry VI
(1430). He and his sons are referred to in
Appendix K.
6. Elizabeth, who married Sir William Atherton,
her father's ward, and had issue.
7. Margaret, who married, first, Nicholas Griffin,
who died 15 Hen. VI (1437) leaving five sons ; and,

Sir Thomas Savile, son of Henry and Elizabeth was born abt 1381. He married Margaret Pilkington, daughter of Sir Thomas Pilkington. Of Thornhill, Tankersley and Eland, Thomas was heir to his cousin, Isabel Savile Darcy, wife of Thomas Darcy. She was daughter of Sir John Savile, uncle of this Thomas. Sir Thomas had for this inheritance lands in Eland, Golcar and in Halifax vicarage, the lordship of Tankersley, and tenements in Rochdale in Lancashire, and other places, formerly the lands of Robert Lathom. He was Knight of the Shire in 1439. Thomas died in 1449. His will was in the feast of St. Edmund's, Archdeanery of Canterbury, 1449, to be buried in Thornhill church.
12. Sir John Savile, son of Thomas and Margaret. He married Alice Gascoigne, daughter of Sir William Gascoigne of Gawthorpe.
