In 1752 Rev. Joseph Rhea married Elizabeth McIlwaine, born 1732, daughter of John and Margaret Scott Anderson McIlwaine.
Margaret married two times. The first, to Thomas Anderson and had three Anderson children.
She married second to John McIlwaine and had at least three more children, making the Andersons and the McIlwaines half-brother and half-sisters. To make a very long story brief, their kids intermarried a generation later. Surnames involved were Dysart, Scott, Anderson, McIlwaine, Breden, McAlister, Beattie, Rhea and others.(2)
Children
After Thomas Anderson died, Margaret Scott married secondly John McIlwaine (McElwane). They had three children:
McIlwaines and Rheas were both Presbyterian. They came to this country and eventually reached Sullivan County, Tennessee which is just across the Virginia border. Two of the Rhea children, Matthew and Margaret, married Robert and Jane Preston, brother and sister married brother and sister.
