The Margaret Smith who married John Vivion “I” was a daughter of John Smith (died 1669) and Margaret. Margaret Smith was not a daughter of John Smith’s neighbor Alexander Smith (whose wife is not proven). The later John Vivion “III” (a son of John Vivion “II” and a grandson of John Vivion “I”) married a Jane Smith who was a great-granddaughter of Alexander Smith. Also, John Smith and Margaret had a son named Thomas Smith, and Thomas fathered a daughter named Ann Smith. That Ann Smith married a grandson of Alexander Smith who was named John Smith (and they were the parents of the Jane Smith who married John Vivion “III”). There are several Y DNA donors who are out of Alexander Smith, but unfortunately, it does not appear that there are any Y DNA donors who are out of John Smith and Margaret.

Thank you, Bill. In my tree, I have Margaret Vivion's father as John Smith, who was born in England about 1632 and died 16 December 1669 in Middlesex, Virginia. I have his wife Margaret with no further information about her. From the William and Mary Quarterly, John was probably an older brother of Alexander. John and Margaret probably had at least two other children, Ann Smith, wife of Joshua Lawson, and Captain John Smith, born about 1662, who married Phebe, widow of George Reeves.

Thanks Mary Helen. I show John Smith and Margaret with the following five children. Margaret married John Vivion. Ann married Joshua Lawson. James married Ann Cary. Thomas married Ann Petty and second Ruth Smith. Captain John Smith married Phoebe. The neighbor Alexander Smith (and his unproven wife) had Lt. John Smith who married the widow Mrs. Jane (Cock) Jones. Alexander also fathered Rachel Smith who married John Wyatt and Samuel Smith who died young. We have several Y DNA donors from the Alexander Smith/Lt. John Smith family, but there is (unfortunately) no known Y DNA donor from the neighboring John Smith and Margaret family. At this point in time, I see no proof that Alexander Smith was or was not related to his neighbor John Smith.
