About Margaret West

Margaret Stitts was born ca. 1588/89 (although other references show ca. 1570 or 1 July 1590) in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England or possibly in St Olave Parish, Surrey, England. She died ca. 1628 (although other references show before 1627, or 1612) in Virginia, British America.[citation needed]

Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers says she married first to Capt. William Powell, second to Edward Blaney and third to Francis West and died in 1628. No info on LNAB/DOB.

Richardson states that Margaret _______ was married twice: first to Edward Blayney and second to Francis West. She was a widow when she married Francis West before 6 February 1625/6. Francis West remarried 31 March 1628.[1] Some believe her LNAB to be Stitts but no proof exists for this.

The information based on extensive collaborative research by descendants - https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/powell/13595/ and the site lists these parents for Alice Powell Warren:

The Children of Capt. William POWELL and 2nd wife Margaret STITTS were

1. ALICE, b. abt. 1622, m. abt. 1642 Thomas WARREN, Sea Capt.

This extensive document on the Powell lines also lists Willilam Powell's 2nd wife as Margaret Stitts and lists them as the parents of Alice Powell Warren: [https://sites.rootsweb.com/~cfii/PowellDocumentRcvdFromGeneLong.pdf]

There is no mention of a wife for this William Powell by the name of Margaret West (Whitney) but other references were found that his wife Margaret Stitts was the same as wife Margaret who also married Edward Blaney and Francis West.

Margaret Whitney (some claim she was born a Salisbury, but since this is usually in relation to a bogus connection with Francis West of Duxbury, it cannot be trusted) had been married three times when she married Francis West. Her first husband is unknown; her second, William Powell, was killed by Indians / died of disease in 1623; her third husband was Edward Blayney.

Francis West (28 October 1586 – c.1634), esquire, Governor of Virginia, who emigrated to Virginia, and married firstly, before 6 February 1626, Margaret, widow of Edward Blayney, by whom he had a son, Francis West, and a daughter, Elizabeth West, and secondly, on 31 March 1628, Temperance Flowerdew ...

Seen as daughter of Robert Whitney & Elizabeth ferch Morgan Without supporting evidence.

On a date between March 4, 1626 and the end of 1628, [SIC: 1623] Edward Blaney, one of James City County's burgesses in 1623, married Margaret Powell, the widow of Captain Powell. Like Powell, Blaney lived on the south side or "Surry side" of James City County, across the James River from Jamestown, Virginia.

Captain William Powell and all of his family were murdered in the terrible massacre of 1623, when so many of the Colonists lost their lives. It was thought that one of his sons, George, escaped, but he was not heard from afterwards; and, because no heir appeared to inherit the estate, his lands were returned to Governor Berkley, who deeded it to Captain Henry Bishop in 1646. [SIC: apparently George survived, and died in 1650]

Minutes of the Council and General Court, 1625 May 9th, p. 58.

Mrs Blayney apparently accused of slandering Dr Pott, concerning an incident when she was married to Capt. Powell
