My dearest Lucilla,

  At last I am fulfilling my promise to write to you. Thanks dear for your letter.

There is not much of interest to write, except that of the weddings.

How many strange things come about, that Charlie (Charles Robert ROSE-INNES & Ethel LEACH) and Dick (Richard William ROSE-INNES & Hannah BROWNLEE) should marry within a month of each other.

Charlie is absorbed in getting his house in perfect order. He is quite an INNES in that I like to see it if people can afford to do it. Charlie is marrying a thrifty wife. Ethel is a pleasant girl.

  Dick and Pansie drove out on Saturday, Dick is supremely happy. He is such an old love affair. Pansie is a truly good girl and is just the wife for Dick. The wealth of the family is a drawback, but that is not everything, if he is satisfied he is making a very nice place of Rocklands he has asked us to go and see the improvements he is making. Dick knows what he is doing and must be careful not to go beyond his means. I suppose one or both the sisters will be coming as there  is to be two weddings.

Is what we have heard true, that your mother is coming to Peelton to meet Florence before she returns to the Cape and we shall be delighted if it be so, and when is it to be?
I have also heard from Helena that your Father is going to england and intends 'taking one of the girls' with him. That will be a fine thing for Jessie supposing it to be her. The Paris Exhibition is the great attraction now.
The BOWKERS are enjoying themselves very much, the CHRISTOPHERSON'S have been very kind to them. They arrived and spent the night with them. In writing Helena said they were starting for Scotland the next day. We expect to see them back in september.
The children are both well. Baby is quite fat and sprightly again.
You will see the TOWNSENDS, they leave by the next steamer, The Mexican, for England. We were sorry you did not see Miss DELGARVE and she was very sorry too, for she was a stranger and did not get your aunt's note till she returned to the ship. She went off with a Clergyman and his wife, Mr. & Mrs. HUBBARD, fellow passengers. Fancy Miss STRANACK'S cheek to call at your house and the INNES'S, we never met her yet she says 'I am good friends with the BIRTS' but we know otherwise, but it suits her purpose to say so. The Ladies Committee have at last agreed to have an vestication so I hope now the matter will be settled, but it takes time, we don't speak of it yet, tell this to your Aunt. We miss Maggie very much, they were four months with us.
Dell has a surrey at the Bolo. They left 10 days ago in their comfortable wagon with Margaret. Walter MURRAY is with them. I suppos you see Mary MURRAY sometimes. She likes the Cape I hear.
Has Miss MILLER returned? If so remember me to her. Give my special love to Willie. I hear he is still growing. What does he think of doing? Has he any object before him, it is time he thinks of this. He must try and fit himself for some sphere of usefulness. I love the dear boy and hope he may be led to chose the right path "The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom" Remember me to kind Mr. Williams. I hope he is quite well and strong again.
I do wish you were not so far away from us all. I have heard some pleasing remarks about my two dear girls 'Jessie and Lucilla'. I know you both try to do right and wish to fill Florence's place in her absence. Girls can do so much to make the home happy. Write soon and tell me how your Mother is. Has your father got quite rid of his cold. We read of his doing in 'The House'. He is too much for that poor, weak 'opposition'. I think Mr. Weiner must wish himself back in his old place.
Have Mr. and Mrs. Cox gone to England? When do they return?
How is Birt, or rather the Dr. getting on? Are they still in the old house? Please give my love to them both. And how does Grace like Johannesburg? Grandpa and your Uncle John met Mr. Forbes at Port Elizabeth. They both liked him very much. He preached a splendid sermon. Your Uncle ???? was in town only for three days. He looks well. We are very glad they are moved from St. Johns. He thinks they will like it.
Lucilla dear, you must write and answer all my questions What needle woman have you used since poor Maria's death? I fear your Mother will not be coming up if your Father is going to England. We do not speak of it as we only heard it from Helena.
I had a letter from Mary F. she speaks more hopefully of her brother. I hope he may really become a new man.
Give her my love. I shall write to her. I have to write to so many. Sometimes my hand is unsteady so you must take this letter as it is, with much love. Read then tear it up. My love to all the INNESS and with one united Love to each and all of you.
