About Margaretha dit “Oudenmeersch” van Rode, vrouwe van Woestyne

17. MARGARET.
x William of Maldegem (Maldeghem la Loyale, pp. 390-39I) ?
(Warlop, 1123)
_____________
Oud Maldeghem…cont
Willem van Maldeghem succeeded his father Philip I as castellan, lord and sheriff of Maldegem. We find him already in 1226 called "castellanus". As the firstborn, according to the feudal system, he succeeded his father in the glorious estate and was also lord of Leischoot, Raas, etc... He married Margareta van de Woestine, wife of Schelderode, in other words Oudenmeersch, daughter of Gerard van Schelderode and Margareta van de Woestine. He married a second time to Agnes van Gistel, daughter of Arnold and Agnes van Vormezele (S. Bavon, no. 188, p. 191, February 1234, new style, - Maldeghem la Loyale, p. 390-391. Bruges, Diocese, St-Donaas, charter ad date March 1242, new style).
From the first bed there were two children: Philip II van Maldeghem (Strubbe:
Egidius van Bredene, III B, no 67, p. 349) and Klara van Maldeghem (Mme de Lalaing, p. 237). The latter became the wife of Frans Belle, son of Salomon and Christiana de Guisnes.
Jan and Gerard van Maldeghem (Mme de Lalaing, p. 237-238) arose from the second marriage, which took place around 1241. Jan became head of the branch of the castellan of Raas and viscount of Râches; he had two sons: Pieter and Jan. According to Countess de Lalaing, the following inscription was read on his tomb in Flines: "Chy gist Jehan de Mandenghien, chevalier et chastellain de Raisse"….to be continued

Curator note: ‘Woestyne’ (meaning ‘desert’) was the old Dutch name of that town on the river Leie/Lys.

The town became francisised under the name Warneton (17th-18th century) and the old Dutch name was mostly forgotten. The need for another Dutch name persisted: it became ‘Waasten’. The town is now since 1963 in the French speaking province of Hainaut/Henegouwen under that name Warneton/Waasten.

There is another place in Flanders called Woestyne near Aalter. In all likelihood, this place gave its name to the important poet and writer Karel van de Woestyne and a few other famous people. But that place was never big enough to host a noble family, where Waasten has always been of some (albeit not so considerable) commercial importance as a river crossing and market place”. -CGV

From this it can be concluded that Warneton, Waasten, Woestine & Woestyne are all the same place. We see Margarete with aliases for all.
