About Marie-Marguerite Moitié dite Maugue

Marguerite and her younger sister Catherine were Filles du Roi, arriving together in Canada in 1663. The orphaned sisters were following their cousin Suzanne Guilbaut and her husband Claude Fezeret and their sons René and Jacques.

Her sister Catherine later married Désiré Viger in 1667 at Montréal.

Fille du Roi


Alt birth year May 6, 1645 Shewas a Fille de Roi who married at age 17 and had 12 children. She was a plaintiff in a case against Pierre Paris who was charge with beating her with a stick while her husband was away. She was probably paralyzed as a result. She is included as an audio account of her experience in an exhibit in the Mussee de Civilisation in Quebec City.

The filles du roi, or King's Daughters, were some 770 women who arrived in the colony of New France (Canada) between 1663 and 1673, under the financial sponsorship of King Louis XIV of France. Most were single French women and many were orphans.
