Marguerite Ivins Wilson passed away peacefully September 25, 1997 at the Holladay Health Care Center.
She was born July 24, 1906 in Colonial Juarez, Mexico to Anna Lowrie Ivins and Guy Carlton Wilson and moved with her family to Salt Lake City in 1912.She graduated from LDS Junior College with a Heber J. Grant Scholarship Award and taught for 20 years in Salt Lake elementary schools. She then continued her education at Utah colleges, George Washington University, UCLA, Berkley, and San Francisco State College graduating with high honors on the way. She received her doctorate in special education with emphasis on mental retardation from George Peabody College for teachers, now a division of Vanderbilt University. When she found that there was no school for cerebral palsy and orthopedically handicapped children, she, with the support of the Junior League, established her own school at Ogden's Dee Hospital, where she supervised and taught. Later she moved the class to an elementary school.
Marguerite was the first president of the Utah Council for Exceptional Children. She served on a number of state advisory committees for special education. In 1956, Dr. Wilson was invited to teach Special Ed at Brigham Young University and became associate professor for the remedial reading and orthopedically handicapped program.
Held membership in various local, national, and international teaching associations; participating in world conferences for special education; listed in "Who's Who"; authored and co-authored many articles, book and manuals. Set apart by LDS authorities to serve on committee preparing manuals for Latin American children.
She is survived by five sisters and three brothers, Rachel W. Mabey (Rendall); Rebecca W. Hodge (Frank); Antoinette W. Daynes (Wilford); Ruth Wilson; Grant I. Wilson (Sue); Mabel W. Evans (Oakley); Meredith Wilson (Marian); Woodrow S. Wilson (LaVida); and many loving nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her sister, Florence W. Anderson (Elbert).
Graveside services will be held Monday, September 29th, 12 noon, at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to services.
