Antoinette Ivins Wilson Daynes passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 of causes incident to age. She now has the opportunity to enjoy once again the sweet relationship with her husband and parents.
Tony was born August 8, 1916 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the first of her siblings to be born in the States after her parents, Guy Carlton Wilson and Anna Lowrie Ivins Wilson left the colonies in Mexico. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her brother and sisters, attended LDS High School and South High, before attending Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, where she graduated in social work in 1936. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority at the U of U and other organizations at both universities. She was employed as a social worker for the Salt Lake County Welfare Department for two and one half years prior to her marriage.
She met her husband, Wilford Woodruff (Bill) Daynes on a blind date and when she returned home she told her sister, Marguerite, that he was the one she wanted to marry. Her wish came true when they were married on February 16, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Their marriage was filled with happiness and devotion to one another and their family. Tony and Bill enjoyed spending time together golfing, fishing, watching sporting events, reading and just being friends. She held many church callings in her life including Relief Society and MIA president and several Stake Sunday School and Relief Society positions. She and Bill spent nine years as hosts for the Public Communications Department of the church from 1978 to 1987. Tony was a granddaughter of Erastus Snow and Anthony W. Ivins and her children were raised with a love and appreciation for their pioneer heritage.
Tony was predeceased by her sweetheart Bill on February 25, 2003.
She is survived by her children, Bill Jr. (Kathy), Littleton, Colo.; Mary Ann Degn (Ralph), Logan, Utah; and John (Beth), Redmond, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
To all of them "Nana" has been the welcome smile, the loving hug, and the comforting word when things were not going as planned. Tony taught her family lessons of love, patience, and especially happiness. She was always ready with a cheery smile and positive comment. Tony knit and crocheted beautiful afghans and quilts for her children and grandchildren and her chocolate applesauce cake was legendary. She spent years playing chess, cards, and Scrabble with her children and grandchildren and has made wonderful memories with them all.
Tony always loved her siblings and is survived by her brother and sisters Grant (Sue), Payson, Utah; Rebecca Hodge, Chevy Chase, MD; Rachel Mabey, Salt Lake City, Utah; Ruth Wilson, New York, NY; and her half-brother, Woodrow Wilson, Slaters-ville, RI.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2003, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City. The services will be preceded by a visitation time for friends and family at the mortuary beginning at 11 a.m.
We'll miss you, Nana!
