“Questions are often asked about Malan and Maria’s decision to adopt a German orphan, a little girl they named Marietjie and it is easy to speculate about the implications of the fact that the child was German. Adoption is both a private and, especially in the Malans’ case, a public affair. Their private motives for adopting the child are unknown. What has been uncovered is that prior to Marietjie’s adoption, Maria suffered more than one miscarriage which she found emotionally traumatic, and also caused an immense amount of tension in the Malan household especially between her and her stepchildren. It seems that the decision to adopt a child came more from Maria’s side than Malan’s.
Maria se verhouding met haar stiefseuns was na 'n goeie begin, net na ontmoeting, verder vroeg al en toe permanent stram. Dit was nie haar skuld nie. Hulle kon egter nie aanpas met haar streng dissipline nie, na jare se sorg en selfs bederwing deur Nettie Fourie, 'n suster van Malan se stiefma. Hannes was darem bereid om haar as mamma aan te spreek, Danie jr het haar heeltemal verwerp.
Ek het die profiel van Dr Malan aangetref met geen vermelding van eggenote nr 1 Martha (Mattie) Margaretha Elizabeth Zandberg nie. Die 2 geslote profiele hierby het die indruk gegee dat dit Maria se kinders was. Uit bg is dit egter duidelik dat Maria geen biologiese kinders gehad het nie en dat hulle Mattie se kinders is: Daniel François Malan en Johannes Laurens Malan waarvoor ek nou nuwe oop profiele geskep het, beide is al oorlede.
