She was born at Kargow a satellite parish of Federow Parish of Mecklenburg

She married 27JAN1843.Gross.Varchow-LehstenMecklenburgGE JOHANN CHRISTIAN THEODOR GENZ/GENTZ(1818.GER-1868.GER s/o Johann Joachim & Johanne ).

Her 1818 Lutheran baptismal record recorded her birth as illegitimate & that father, Johann Christian BRUGGMANN was serving with the army at Rostok. Johann evidently married Sophia Schmidt as soon as he returned from the army. Maria Dorthea was separated from her mother, Sophia, & is found in the 1819 Kargow Census living with Fritz BRÜGMANN(b.1792) & wife, Sophia NELSSEN(b.1797) probable uncle & aunt.

Sponsors at her baptism at Kargow included: Maria BRUGGMAN of Neuhof, Maria Dorthea SCHMIDT of Kargow, and Johann Christoph Hinrich SCHULTZ of Kargow(TavernServant of Kargow on 28NOV1821 when he married at Federow: Anna Luisa Frederika ZUELKE(d/o Jacob GOTTFRIED a Kargow Weaver).

In the USA the spelling of GENZ evidently changed to GENTZ.

Lehsten seems to have been part of the larger parish of Gross Varchow which was located between Mollenhagen and Sulten.

She is probably the same who appears in Clayton Co. IA German Language Newspaper Obituary c1891(BREDBENNER Notes) naming her as Marie GENTZ/GENZ, nee BRÜGGMANN. The obituary writer says she was 73 years old at time of death with birthplace at Tarnow, Mecklenburg(a few kilometers to east of Sulten and Kittendorf where BRUGGMANS last resided before departure for Iowa). She came to America in 1870 and died 17JAN???? at home of Ernst LAU of Volga.TwpClaytonIA.

She may be same Maria GENZ(1817-15JAN1891) buried Communia Cemetery of Clayton Co. IA. It is probable that her obituary confused Tarnow as birthplace versus perhaps last residence or perhaps informants to the newspaper confused the spelling of Kargow with that of Tarnow. It is quite likely that this Maria BRÜGGMANN-GENZ is same Maria BRÜGGMANN born DEC1818 in Kargow, married in Lehsten area(a few kilometers North of Mollenhagen) and removed to the Tarnow area after 1868 death of husband till 1870 and then came over to Clayton Co. IA with stops perhaps in LogansportCassIN and St. Louis MO where GENZ in-laws resided.

She is probably the same Maria GENZ 54YRS Widow who arrived NYC 09NOV1870 on the ‘Thuringia' from Hamburg with Marie GENZ 26 Single and H. GENZ 16 Male Laborer.

It is not known if Caroline and Ernst WULFF were ever married and if they emigrated to Clayton.CoIA
