About Maria Dundas
Maria Graham, later Lady Callcott Regency diarist, travel writer, artist and naval wife. British woman who was one of the first people to write about Chile, before anyone knew much about South America at all.
Maria arrived in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1822, newly widowed following the death at sea of her first husband, Captain Thomas Graham; in Valparaiso, she met the charismatic Admiral Cochrane, the disgraced British Navy officer who commanded various South American navies through their wars of independence. They begin a passionate, secretive affair. (Ref. Lady Rachel Billington's research - her novel - Maria and the Admiral,)
