About Maria Henschen

"M. von B. hade före sitt första giftermål varit en av banbrytarna för den åttaklassiga skoltyp, vilken spelat en så stor roll för vår kvinnliga undervisning. År 1870 grundlade hon nämligen jämte en krets intresserade Uppsala högre elementarläroverk för flickor samt förestod därefter under en följd av år denna läroanstalt, för vilken hon bland yngre akademiska lärare lyckades förvärva framstående lärarkrafter. Efter sin överflyttning till Stockholm har hon bl. a. varit friherrinnan Sofie Leijonhufvud-Adlersparres medredaktris för tidskriften Dagny (1886) samt under samarbete med sin svåger Carl von Bergen intresserat sig för de spiritistiska fenomenen."

The Magdeburg school

1870- The school was founded by Mrs. Maria Henschen as a school for girls. One education in language and one lower secondary school education. The school was for "The educated class".

1889- The school moved to it's present location.

1902- A foundation higher elementary school was founded and started it's educational activity. The foundation Magdeburg took over the school. French was the most important subject and was studied from year one. There were eight classes in the school.

Needlework was another important subject for the girls in the school, to prepare them for the domestic work as wife and mother. The school also had a rich social-life with parties and associations. Around 1900 many of the graduated girls continued to go out to work.

Magdeburg means "the castle of girls".

1962- The Swedish parliament decided to have a 9 year long education for all children.

All the girls-school disappeared 1964 the last girls graduated.
