Around 1767, Maria (Kroehr) Gruber died.

"BIOGRAPHY

Maria was was born 1705 in Stockham, Salzburg, Austria, daughter of Peter Kroher and Barbara A Rohrmoser.

BACKGROUND

Maria was born in Saalfelden (Erzbistum) Salzburg <ref>" Taufbuch IV (1688-1727), p. 195, [https://data.matricula-online.eu/en/oesterreich/salzburg/saalfelden...)]"</ref>

See Image Maria Kraher: "Maria filia lgtma [abbreviation for legitima] Petri Kraer zu Unterstochern [???] et Margar: Grundtnerin ux: eius Lenaste [???] Cathar. Riederin zu . . . [a place name I can't make out] ministro feria dicto." This would translate as "Maria legitimate daughter of Peter Kraer of Unterstochern [??] and his wife Margaret Grundtner, godmother Catharine Rieder of . . . , done on the said date."

The maiden name here is Kraer (which is essentially the same name as your Austrian correspondent Kraher and the maiden name of Kroer suggested in The Progeny of Peter Gruber). So either this Maria had married a Rohrmoser (and been widowed) before she married Johann Mosshammer in Salzburg (in which case she was probably related to the two other Kroehrs on that transport) -

Family and Property

Maria (Kroehr) apparently married 3 times. 2 husbands were passengers with her on the Purysburg https://www.gasalzburgers.com/history/transports-ships. 1st she married Hanns Moshammer who died shortly after arriving in Savannah. She married 2nd time Peter Gruber/Groover (1697-1740). By 1736 Peter and Maria had 2 children, Peter Jr and Johannn Gruber. Peter Jr. died while still a baby, and Johannes who became their surviving boy, grew up in Ebenezer and married Maria (Kalcher) Gruber.

There were also Kalchers, with Original Salzburgers, passengers on the 2nd Transport, "Prince of Wales" that arrived on 28 Dec 1734. They had 3 daughters, the 2nd child and middle daughter was also named Maria. Maria's older sister, Ursula and her husband Christian Buerck had 5 children, all whose baptismal Patron was Pastor Boltzius and his wife Gertrude. Gertrude's name was Kroehr and the Kroehrs were on the Puryburg with Peter and Pastor Boltzius.

Death

RESEARCH

Maria had always been a mystery and her name a complete nightmare. With recent discovery we are able to bring a more accurate history of her Austrian beginnings.

The problem with older, self published biographies is that the authors did not have the same tools genealogists have today; therefore, thanks to the internet, we have a digital copy of the passenger lists which identified her as a Salzburger. The Salzburgers community and the role they played in Georgia are now well documented, indexed and digitalized, so we have at our disposal the passenger lists of the Salzburger Transports. According to that list, her name was actually Maria Kraher, but her father remarried a Rohrmoser. She was travelling with her step mother, Barbara aboard the Purysburg where they met Johannes Mosshammer and the Gruber brothers, Hans and Peter. <ref>Transports - Ships - Original Source Information [https://www.gasalzburgers.com/history/transports-source]</ref>

'''Names can describe a location and its civil structure at a given time'''

: Our German Translator, An Anonymous suggested I amend Maria's birthplace explaining "Erzbistum" means archdiocese and means the territory over which the archbishop has church authority; "Erzstift" means prince-archbishopric and means the territory over which the archbishop is the wordly ruler and lord as well.

Emigration

Previous Research

: The original file concerning Peter and Maria began from a biography written by one of their descendants, Fred Lee Groover called the Progeny of Peter Gruber. The abstract reads:

Peter (Gruber) Groover was born 1697 and lived with his parents Michael Gruber and Magdalena Amoser in the Gastein Valley of Austria. Peter immigrated to America ca. 1734 and settled in Georgia. He married Maria Kroer Mosshammer (widow of Johannes Mosshammer) sometime prior to 1738. They lived in Georgia and were the parents of two children. Descendants lived primarily in Georgia, Florida, and elsewhere.

At the end of March, (27 Mar 2021) Walter Kraher, a fellow descendant who was born and continues to reside in Salzburg sent his research Maria from the internet and the library. The follow are excerpts of his findings:

27 Oct 2023: "I once read a comment from you from which I realized that you were trying to decipher the pastors' handwriting, which was difficult to read.

I remember you couldn't decipher the place "Unterstocking".

The farm into which Peter Kraher probably married was in Unterstocking in order to leave his farm in Pfaffenhofen to his sister.
But the farm in Unterstocking no longer exists.

I would like to read Captain Frey's logbook from the "Purysburg". It's probably lying around somewhere!
I read somewhere that there were pirate attacks on this ship during the Salzburg crossing.
Apparently there was also a court hearing against the captain because of poor treatment of the people of Salzburg during the crossing........."

The letter sent 27 and 31 of March 2021 is presently in "Discussion" Georgia Salzburger Project where we will hopefully engage lively analysis and discourse?

Acknowledgement

:From Walter Kraher, we owe a lot of knowledge about our ancestral line (Kraher) in Austria to Mr. Alois Aglassinger from Saalfelden, who went to great lengths to research the old church archives and who entered his knowledge on GENI.COM. With various additions about the life of some ancestors. Mr. Aglassinger died in 2005.

:A second debt owed to a Wikitree An Anonymous who answered my G2G cry for help is understanding German/Latin to assist in posting the changes to the two profiles between Maria Kraher and her husband Peter Gruber! Thank you Zoro!
