Johannes Gruber (a) was born Dec. 1739 in Ebenezer (b), Ebenezer Parish (Effingham County), Georgia, USA, son of Peter Gruber and Maria (Kroehr) Mosshammer Gruber. He was the brother of Peter Gruber, Jr (1738).
His German name eventually became the Americanized spelling of "John Groover". On May 05, 1754, his confirmation ceremony took place at the Mt. Zion Church in Ebenezer, St. Matthews Parish (Effingham County), Georgia.
On June 04, 1765, John married Maria "Mary" Magdalene Kalcher at the Mt. Zion Church in St. Philip Parish (Effingham County), Georgia. Their children include John Groover Jr. (1766), Peter Benjamin Groover (1767), Soloman Groover (1769), Joshua Groover (1772), Charles Groover (1775), David Groover (1777), William Groover (1778) and Elizabeth Groover (1790).
In 1780, John Gruber, age 40, died in Cowpen Branch, Effingham County, Georgia. He was murdered by Tories at or near his home during the Revolutionary War.
Footnotes: (a) Alternate reference name spelling as Johnannes or Johannas. (b) In 1734, the first Salzburger immigrants were assigned land 25 miles north of Savannah, Georgia by General James Edward Oglethorpe, a wealthy young British Protestant Member of Parliament and philanthropist, appointed in 1732 to head the new Colony of Georgia and settle there. With recommendation from Salzburger pastors, he named the town, its bordering creek, and the Parish, "Ebenezer" (stone of help). In 1754, Ebenezer Parish was renamed St. Matthew's Parish. In 1777, Effingham County was created from the colonial parishes of St. Matthew and St. Philip.
