About Maria Christina Stephens

WARNING!!! Various individuals have tried to merge unrelated families into this one and have posted very inaccurate information here. We strive for accuracy so please do not post any changes or additional data without supporting documentation. Always be suspicious of anything that cannot be verified with specific historical documents before copying and reposting from other sites. Rittenhouse family historians as well as reputable Stephens family historians have completely discredited the story that Peter Stephens's wife was a Rittenhouse, That whole myth was perpetuated when a writer confused Peter Stephens with his son Lewis, in an article on descendants of Lewis's daughter, Mary Emmitt. I can provide proof of that!! (Daniel Bly).

Maria Christina, always called "Christina," maiden name unknown, was married circa 1712 to Hans Peter Stephan/Stephens aka Peter Stephens. She was still living in 1757 when Peter's will was probated, but probably died circa 1760 in Stephens City, Frederick Co. Virginia. Children: Proper birth order, according to Peter's will.

Birth: 1695, Germany Death: 1758 Virginia, USA

Maria Christina's maiden name remains unknown. She and husband are listed in the records of Reverend Johann Casper Stoever, sponsoring at least two baptisms as Peter Stephan and wife Maria Christina.

Maria Christina Stephens is NOT the daughter of Nicholas & Wilhelmina Rittenhouse as some have suggested. Their daughter was named Anna Maria and she married Jan Casper Jansen (anglicized to John Johnson). This couple lived long lives producing many descendants.

Per Deborah Shelton Wood: I spoke by phone to Larry Rittenhouse, Presisident of the Rittenhouse Society. The marriage banns and documents, specifying names and dates, were sent to me circa 2005 by Rittenhouse Society President, Larry Rittenhouse of Canada. I shared this information with all and it was added to the file cabinet of the then Stephens Forum at family dot com by Jarie Slack.

Seven Children of Maria Christina Stephens were written in the Last Will of Peter Stephens, Frederick Co VA Will Book 2, page 266:
