About MAJ Lewis "Ludwig" Stephens, Sr
He married Mary Rittenhouse in 1743 in Frederick County, Virginia. They had 3 children during their marriage, Peter, Lewis and Mary. He is buried at the Old Graveyard cemetery, with his wife Mary.
In 1731, the Stephens family traveled down to the southern part of Shenandoah Valley with Jot Hite Party. He helped his Dad , Peter, build the ferry service and built a gristmill in 1732. The ferry is at the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers come together. (Harper Ferry)
In 1736, Lewis was authorized by the Frederick County government to keep an "Ordinary," a roadhouse or tavern, at his home in the Stephens family settlement.
Around 1740, Lewis began purchasing land from Jost Hite and others. He bought land from Lord Thomas Fairfax.
In 1745, Lewis purchased 195 acres on Cedar Creek,7 miles west of his father home. He built a house for his family and also a water powered mill.
With the outbreak of the French and Indian War Lewis served as an officer in the Frederick County Militia under George Washington. Lewis built a hexagonal stone powder magazine that reaches deep into the ground near his house and mill on Cedar Creek, it stands today. It used by Isaac Zane when he produced artillery munitions for the Revolutionary war, and an ice house. This site was known as "STEPHENS FORT".
In 1754, Lewis received 424 acres from his father. the 1st years ,Lewis lay out his plan for the lots for the town of Stephens City. Lewis petitioned the government of Virginia in Williamsburg for a town charter. The Virginia Colonel General Assemble established a town and called by the name of Stephensdburgh.
On April 28, 1757, Lewis dad Peter, made will. Lewis received the mansion house and 25 acres.
After the wary Lewis established an iron worked on his tract at Cedar Creek. It produces pig iron and wrought iron. Lewis sold it to Isaac Zane in 1767. He and his family moved back to the family lands in Stephens City.
Note of Old Graveyard. Is composed of town lots number 76&77, each a half acre in area. They were sold by Lewis Stephens, Jr. to 13 Trustees .
