Mary of Burgundy (1380-1422) was a daughter of Philip the Bold and his wife Margaret III, Countess of Flanders. She was Duchess of Savoy by her marriage to Amadeus VIII of Savoy, later known as Antipope Felix V.

Family

Mary was born in Dijon and was the eighth of nine children. Her siblings included: John the Fearless, Anthony, Duke of Brabant, Philip II, Count of Nevers, Margaret, Countess of Holland, Catherine, Duchess of Austria and Bonne of Burgundy.

Mary's maternal grandparents were Louis II of Flanders and his wife Margaret of Brabant. Her paternal grandparents were John II of France and his first wife Bonne of Bohemia. Bonne was a daughter of John of Luxembourg and his first wife Elizabeth of Bohemia.

Philip had made alliances with low county Bavarians, by marrying John to Margaret of Bavaria. Philip also made links with the Dukes of Austria and of Savoy, by marrying Catherine to Leopold IV of Austria, and Mary to Amadeus VIII Savoy, son of Amadeus VII, Count of Savoy and Bonne of Berry. Their marriage was contracted 11 November 1386 in Sluis, Zeeland; married by proxy 30 October 1393 in Chalon-sur-Saône; in person at Arras May 1401.

Mary and Amadeus had nine children, with further descendents:

  1. Margaret of Savoy (1405-1418)

3. Anthony of Savoy (1408)
4. Margaret of Savoy (1410-1479) married to:
1. Louis III, titular king of Naples;
2. Louis IV, Count Palatine of the Rhine;
3. Ulrich V, Count of Württemberg.
5. Mary of Savoy (1411-1469), married Filippo Maria Visconti, duke of Milan.
6. Amadeus of Savoy, Prince of Piemonte (1412-1431)
7. Louis of Savoy (1413-1465), his successor
8. Bonne of Savoy (1415-1430)
9. Philip of Savoy, Count of Genève (1417-1444) unmarried.
In 1416, Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor elevated Amadeus from Count to Duke of Savoy. Mary duly became Duchess. From then onwards Dukes ruled over Savoy.

The couple were married for thirty-six years before Mary died in 1422 at Chateau of Thonon les Bains [1]. She is buried in the Abbey of Hautecombe. [2]
